State Rep. Donni Steele, Chair of the House Transportation Appropriations Sub-Committee, recently joined a delegation of Michigan legislators at a leadership summit at the White House in Washington, D.C., where they met with cabinet-level officials to discuss critical issues affecting Michigan.

“These conversations gave us an important opportunity to bring Michigan’s voice directly to federal decision-makers,” said Steele (R-Orion Township). “A strong cooperation between state and federal leaders is essential in addressing the issues facing our State and Nation.”

Advocating for infrastructure funding was a key priority during Steele’s visit. She met privately with senior U.S. Department of Transportation officials to press for continued federal investment in Michigan’s roads, bridges, and transportation systems.

Approximately one-third of Michigan’s road funding currently comes from the federal government through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, which is scheduled to expire at the end of this year. Steele emphasized the importance of maintaining stable federal support and urged an extension of IIJA to ensure long-term infrastructure planning and improvements for Michigan communities.

“Investing in transportation is about more than roads and bridges, it’s about maintaining a strong economy and keeping Michigan competitive with other states.” said Steele. “Meeting directly with federal transportation leaders gave me the opportunity to advocate for continued investment in infrastructure projects that create jobs today and prepares Michigan workers for long-term careers in construction, trades and all aspects involved in transportation.”

Steele said she will continue working with state and federal partners to ensure Michigan secures the resources needed to maintain strong infrastructure, economic stability, and future prosperity for our great State.
